Foundation Skills
This unique series of programs was developed based on the input of industry stakeholders, who have expressed a continuing need for support for the workplace development of foundational skills. Programs address the basic skills required regardless of occupation, building learner confidence in areas that support teamwork and collaboration, and form a foundation for more advanced training.
The following programs are available to all member companies and their employees on the Skills and Learning Portal or are available for sale on a single CD.
Literacy
Provides the tools to identify and respond to gaps related to reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Textile Mathematics
Covers the basic mathematical concepts commonly associated with textile manufacturing, such as fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages and measurements.
Problem-solving
Provides a structured process to solve problems, including techniques to define, identify and analyze the problem, then develop and implement solutions.
Communications
Introduces effective communication in the workplace, providing suggestions for professional written communication and oral presentations.
Competitiveness Issues
Reviews basic business concepts, communicating the importance of understanding the challenges associated with conducting manufacturing operations in today’s global marketplace.
Coping Skills
Learners review how to manage stress in today's workplace, with emphasis on coping with job-related stress at both the individual and organizational levels.
Introduction to Personal Computer Skills
Targets new users of the Microsoft Office suite, providing instruction on the basic functionality of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. Not available on CD.
Knowledge of Environmental Issues
Reviews key environmental issues affecting the Canadian textile sector, including energy use, wastewater, emissions and related regulations.
Team-Building Skills
Reviews the steps necessary to build a successful team, including various team roles and the stages of forming and sustaining a team.
